The new version contains significant enhancements. The program was basically rewritten from scratch. This is similar to moving from Windows 98 or Me to Windows XP. My first computer came with Windows Me installed as the OS. XP came out in the fall of that year. I did the upgrade as soon as it was available. Overall it was a great improvement even though there were some driver issues to deal with.

MNF 5.0 is that kind of a step up in the quality of the user experience. The company has obviously learned a great deal since the product was brought to market. The operation of the program is much smoother and faster. The load time is significantly improved. The featue set has been extended. There is  now a tabbed interface and multiple searches can be carried out much faster and easier.

The company has announced that there will be a small price increase soon. As of this writing the price increase has not been put into effect to the best of my knowledge. The company has a policy of free upgrades for life, unlike most software developers, and they give very good value for the price. The software can save hours of time in keyword research so it will still be a very good value with a small price increase.

I have put up many sites to date. A few of them get a little bit of search engine organic traffic. I was just putting up content without any real thought to keywords. Keywords are the terms that people use in web searches. If you want organic traffic you must be conscious of keywords and keyword usage. I have been leaving this up to accident! I will tell one funny story on myself. I downloaded the tool and did a hot trends search. I saw a niche that looked too good to be true. I did some further research on the niche and there are actually some words that are very good, but the original demonstrates a gotcha. The term that caught my eye had an apostrophe. Because of that the competition look unusually weak for such a good term. One of the factors that goes into the competition index that is given is how often the term is used in a url. The apostrophe is a character that is not allowed in a file name or url, so the usage in url’s is zero for any keyword that contains an apostrophe. This is just something to remember when interpreting the results.

It appears that both tools use a defined content management system. This allows people to put up pages without worrying about the technical details of web publishing. For those with a little knowledge of web publishing it is possible to produce a more differentiated page. A unique page may attract a few more visitors by getting cited by others in the community. I have an idea for a ‘help’ page for Squidoo. I may put an equivalent page on both sites so that I can compare the draw more directly.
